Memories Week #3

1. As a child, which was your favorite ride at the amusement park?
2. What did you do as a child that got you into the most trouble? How did your parents handle it?
3. Describe a childhood birthday.
4. Have you met or worked with any famous people? Where, who, when…?
5. Tell about any pets you had as a child.

"I remember Mom telling about going out to the old Saltair (I think that is what it was called, as I understand it, it was by the Great Salt Lake). I don't know that they had a favorite ride but they would go out there for activites and dances, but there was a rollercoaster also, as I remember it. (If I am wrong, my brothers can correct me.)

I remember having a surprise birthday party for Daddy for his 70th birthday. We had it in our backyard. We had invited Mom and Dad to come up for dinner and when they arrived we were all there. We had a good time eating and playing games. As I remember it some of Aunt Inez' family happened to be there so they came as well. I don't think either Mom or Dad had many birthday parties as children, at least I don't know that I ever heard about them.

When Mom had the opportunity to go to England with the Singing Mothers, she indicated that some of the General Authorities traveled with them. They would have also been at the dedication of the Hyde Park Chapel, which is why they were there. Mom also had the opportunity to sing at October General Conference. I don't know how often they got to talk to the General Authorities but she got to see them.

I don't remember Mom or Dad talking about pets."

Memories Week #2

1. Do you know of a favorite stuffed animal or toy as a child they had? (I'd be amazed if you do know about this)
2. Tell about some of your neighbors in different stages of your life & their life.
3. What is a special smell you remember from your childhood or your parents?
4. Tell of when they did something special for someone else.
5. What was their greatest joy? What was their greatest sorrow?

"Our neighbor that live across the street were the Wells family. They had 5 girls and they matched up close to each one of us in our family. There was Edith - LeAnne, Sharon - David, Lynette - Wendall, Laurel - Yvonne and Mary Lee - Marvin. They also had George. They moved about 1960 to Lander, Wyoming. I know with Marvin and I especially, we were always together with Laurel and Mary Lee, in fact there were times that Mom and Dad would say, "We should send your clothes to the Wells' as you are always there". And the Wells would say the same thing to their kids. We had a great time together. Mom and Dad would play games with them. I remember one New Years Eve that there was a party at the Wells'. I had gone to bed and woke up and Mom and Dad weren't home (I have no idea what time it was) and remember thinking something like "when are you coming home?"

Mom and Dad enjoyed playing cards with Harold and Margaret Robins. They would play at either house at least once a month.

I remember hearing about a camping trip that Mom and Dad took with several other couples. I don't know where they went or much more than that about it other than they went.

Almost every Saturday morning one of the things that we did was make bread. I would start the bread and then Mom would finish it. Some days we would have scones for lunch. I remember the smell of fresh bread coming out of the oven. There were times that as I came home from school I would smell cookies or something baking as I came in the door. It was wonderful to come home to those kinds of smells. I also remember the smell of pine cleaner. We used it to mop the kitchen floor.

I think their greatest joy was their family. They loved to be with family. They would be happy for the accomplishments that we made as their children. Their greatest sorrow was the death of their loved ones. That was hard for them, but they also looked for the good things that happened at the time of the passing."

Memories Week #1

1. What was their favorite childhood activity?
2. Did they have a nickname as a child? Did any of their family members have nicknames?
3. Did they have any exciting experiences camping or hunting that you know of.
4. Recall and write about a special party that they had given or been to that you know of.
5. Do you know of any special feelings they had as a child regarding fears, fantasies, etc?

"When Mom was growing up she told me that she had the name Erna Penny, maybe it was Penny and I didn't understand why. Then Mom told me Earn a Penny. So I am not sure which it was. When Mom and Dad started going together Uncle Chet called Daddy "Hold Him Away Closer". As far as nicknames for their family members I don't recall hearing any.

I remember hearing Mom talk about going places with her family and when they went they sang while going where they were going. I think that is probably one of the reasons that Mom loved music so much and one of the reasons that Mom instilled a love of music in us.

I remember that Daddy went hunting on occasion and that he came home with a deer. I remember having it hang to cool in the barn. (But as far as anything else the boys would have to share that information.)

I remember going up to Heber for their 50th Wedding anniversary as a family. We stayed at the Chalet. It was a fun time. We had a wedding cake for Mom and Dad. As we got ready to leave it was so cold that some of the cars had to be jump started to get them going. Dave had to have his car towed because he couldn't get it started. They loved to have the family get together. That was one of the things that made life great for them."

She was always making sure we all had something fun to do and ran around socializing with us all! She loved treats. Her cookie jar what a delight, her yummy cookies! I miss her!I would say the best animal to describe grandpa would be a Panda! He was always a watchful eye playful and loved to tickle us kids and like to make us smile! He was quick and playful and loved to sit and relax but watched us kids play and have fun! Grandpa loved to go fishing! Relax and play I would say was his nature! I miss his cute smile with no teeth showing! that contagious grin that I can see in my mind right now! Like I said about grandpa for his hobbies he loved to go fishing! He was a farm boy and new how to work hard and farm! His garden was amazing! I remember the corn he could grow and the berry's! Yummy! Grandma we all can see her cooking and sewing! It seemed to be always for someone! a gift she was working on for a wedding, Christmas, or for fun! Her cooking was always for all of us to eat! Her rolls, cookies, bread! She had big canning parties! I'm sure you all helped can some way or remember smelling all the yummy corn and funny smelling rhubarb! stinky! She was a giver and new how to make a meal out of flour! Her voice! Wow I can almost hear her voice now...singing the swallow song! When we sing that as a family I can't tell you how many times I can here her sing with us! I'm the one always crying because I can hear her and it brings me to tears! I would say the activities for the two of them would be Hearts! They could play a mean game of hearts with my parents! Funny story I want to share, The place they had in winter haven my husbands mom owns it! THE....WARM GET AWAY! So the story goes......Hey Grandpa this is Greg Neer my boyfriend. -Nicole

"1. Food at grandma's was always good. I always looked forward to getting together and having yummy food. Boy, could she cook! If only I could carry that tradition on.
2. Canning in the fall when all the veggies and fruits were ripe and ready. Many of my memories are of shucking corn and cleaning it. Also, peaches are a huge memory when it came to canning.
3. I don't remember sitting and watching a movie with them. There was always too much going on and if there was just a few of us I remember playing cards more then watching TV.
4. As for animals, I would guess the most loving animals would be who they are. They were always so kind and gentle.
5. Favorite colors - I don't know, but when I think of them I remember a lot of their clothes had brown, orange and pea green. Which have all come back in style and I still think of them when I see those colors. Favorite hobbies for grandma would be sewing and quilting and grandpa, working in the garden and playing cards."
-Racquel

"OK the food Irember the most and the one my kids love to this day are beans rarbet this is the one with green beans[the botteled ones from the garden] and cheese sauce over salttens or dry bread wiht grandmas home made chilesauceThe other one is Pico Flake that gramdpa maid at christmas."
-JoEllen

"Mom told me that she didn't like to do dishes. When they got a dishwasher it was because Grandma Rogers knew that she didn't like dishes and Grandma Rogers bought one for them. Maybe that is why I didn't like to do dishes either. One of those inherited things.

Mom loved to go to musicals. But I remember hearing Mom say that she didn't like "Sevens Brids for Seven Brothers". Apparently prior to going to see it there had been something happened and it put mom in a bad mood and she didn't like it because of the memory it brought. She never did say what happened.
Mom loved Shasta Daisys. I don't know why. I think mom just loved flowers. She loved to work out in her flower garden. She took pride in having it look nice. Daddy loved to work there as well, after he retired. Prior to retirement he worked on the farm and didn't have time for the flower gardens.

Mom loved to quilt. (We all know that) She loved to come up with different ways to make quilts. She loved to make things for others. It didn't matter what it was. Mom and Dad enjoyed reading especially after they retired. I would go down to see them and they both had a book they were reading."
-Yvonne

"I never realized how much flowers remind me of Grandma until I read what Mom wrote about Grandma loving Shasta daisies. I remember that Grandma loved crocus because they were the first flower of Spring. I also have been told that she loved to receive a bouquet of dandelions from a child because it meant that Spring had arrived. Lilacs remind me of her because the North side of the yard was lined with them and in front of the lilacs was a row of peonies. Snapdragons remind me of her because I remember her showing me how to make them "talk." There's also Iris that lined the long driveway back to the shed (and the East side of the yard) that we always took to decorate the graves on Memorial Day. I don't know many people who grow "baby's breath" but it seems that she grew it on the West side of the house and not far away a row of pink roses lined the west side of the yard. Also, not to be outdone by the early spring flowers, grandma had seedums that bloomed late into the fall. I guess Grandma had flowers for all seasons! When I grow up I want to be able to "play" in my flower gardens like Grandma did!!! :)"

Preferences Week #4

1. What is their favorite season? Do you know why?
2. Tell about any of their travels or vacations you know of?
3. What was their favorite holiday? How did they celebrate?
4. Did they know any foreign languages, which ones? Why did they learn it?
5. Describe a favorite dress/ outfit, etc.

"Grandma's favorite season was Summer because she could go fishing with Grandpa, Fall because she could harvest and preserve her fruits and veggies, Winter because she could gather her family together for Christmas and Spring because the flowers bloom! She was almost always happy from my point of view. I would say Grandpa's favorite seasons were Summer and Fall because he could work in his garden and harvest.

I remember they went on a cruise and Grandma went shopping for long shorts. We thought she was the coolest grandma ever!

I think grandma's favorite holiday was Christmas because of her love of family, caroling and baking. When we got together there was plenty of all of it. She did Christmas amazingly."
-Cheryl

" don't think she had a favorite outfit, but I remember that when Grandma got dressed up she would wear a bright lipstick and I always wanted to try on her lipstick when I was a little girl.
Grandpa always wore his bib overalls with a long sleeved shirt when he worked and a polyester shirt when he dressed up. (That is . . . until Melba gave him a new sense of style.)"
-Cheryl

"I’m not sure of a favorite season, but I am certain that Grandpa looked forward to late spring and summer because he was able to plant and work his garden and of course he could go fishing.

I also am unsure of a favorite holiday, but I do know that there were some holidays that I love because of the memories I have from family time Grandma created. I loved the Christmas parties because Grandma made them fun for everyone! We sang songs, played all kinds of games (in which most everyone joined in), ate great food (including the rice pudding dessert where you won dinner out for getting the whole almond), Santa would come and sing Jingle, jingle, jingle, we’d exchange gifts, and even act out the nativity scene.

Easter was another time I love and remember because of their efforts. There was nothing better than standing by the front door waiting with all the cousins for your turn to go out and run all around the yard looking for plastic Easter eggs in hopes that you’d find the one with the $20 bill. I have a very hard time celebrating Easter without an Easter egg hunt because of it."
-Marlies

"2. St. George in the winter, which they loved! Also, I remember a family reunion at a cabin.
3. I would say Christmas! I always loved the christmas parties and looked forward to them every year! I will never forget grandma's last one........that is how I will always remember her, always running around getting everything done! She was amazing!
5. I just remember colors and fabrics. I rememer some pea green polyester pants grandpa wore and also an orange color I thought only grandparents would wear. Of course overalls were always a hit with grandpa and an apron was usually seen on grandma!"
-Racquel

"As I remember it Mom had a hard time when it was hot. I don't know that she didn't like the summer just when it was extremely hot. I think that is one of the reasons that they got Air Conditioning after they built their new house, but they waited a few years before they got the AC. I don't know if Mom or Dad had a favorite season.

As a family we didn't go on many vacations because it was hard for Daddy to find someone that could milk the cows while we were gone. I do remember taking LeAnne back to Yellowstone when she worked there one summer. She had come down for a missionary farewell, I don't know whose, and we took her back. I remember singing while we traveled. We went to Snowflake for the Flake reunion a couple of times.

Mom went to England with the Singing Mothers and that was a highlight in her life. Mom and Dad went to Italy to pick up Ivan from his mission and toured parts of Europe on the way home. Mom and Dad went to Israel with LeAnne and Carl and then on to Germany for the Passion Play in Oberamergow. They had a great time doing that. One Christmas Mom and Dad went to Hawaii and went to the Rose Bowl Parade on the way home. They went on a trip back to New England to see the fall leaves and thought that was cool. I cant tell you any specifics about their trips other than they went. Some of the trips that they went on were chartered trips.

Mom and Dad didn't learn a language. They didn't have a need to learn one."
