"Grandma's favorite season was Summer because she could go fishing with Grandpa, Fall because she could harvest and preserve her fruits and veggies, Winter because she could gather her family together for Christmas and Spring because the flowers bloom! She was almost always happy from my point of view. I would say Grandpa's favorite seasons were Summer and Fall because he could work in his garden and harvest.
I remember they went on a cruise and Grandma went shopping for long shorts. We thought she was the coolest grandma ever!
I think grandma's favorite holiday was Christmas because of her love of family, caroling and baking. When we got together there was plenty of all of it. She did Christmas amazingly."

" don't think she had a favorite outfit, but I remember that when Grandma got dressed up she would wear a bright lipstick and I always wanted to try on her lipstick when I was a little girl.
Grandpa always wore his bib overalls with a long sleeved shirt when he worked and a polyester shirt when he dressed up. (That is . . . until Melba gave him a new sense of style.)"

"I’m not sure of a favorite season, but I am certain that Grandpa looked forward to late spring and summer because he was able to plant and work his garden and of course he could go fishing.
I also am unsure of a favorite holiday, but I do know that there were some holidays that I love because of the memories I have from family time Grandma created. I loved the Christmas parties because Grandma made them fun for everyone! We sang songs, played all kinds of games (in which most everyone joined in), ate great food (including the rice pudding dessert where you won dinner out for getting the whole almond), Santa would come and sing Jingle, jingle, jingle, we’d exchange gifts, and even act out the nativity scene.
Easter was another time I love and remember because of their efforts. There was nothing better than standing by the front door waiting with all the cousins for your turn to go out and run all around the yard looking for plastic Easter eggs in hopes that you’d find the one with the $20 bill. I have a very hard time celebrating Easter without an Easter egg hunt because of it."

"2. St. George in the winter, which they loved! Also, I remember a family reunion at a cabin.
3. I would say Christmas! I always loved the christmas parties and looked forward to them every year! I will never forget grandma's last one........that is how I will always remember her, always running around getting everything done! She was amazing!
5. I just remember colors and fabrics. I rememer some pea green polyester pants grandpa wore and also an orange color I thought only grandparents would wear. Of course overalls were always a hit with grandpa and an apron was usually seen on grandma!"

"As I remember it Mom had a hard time when it was hot. I don't know that she didn't like the summer just when it was extremely hot. I think that is one of the reasons that they got Air Conditioning after they built their new house, but they waited a few years before they got the AC. I don't know if Mom or Dad had a favorite season.
As a family we didn't go on many vacations because it was hard for Daddy to find someone that could milk the cows while we were gone. I do remember taking LeAnne back to Yellowstone when she worked there one summer. She had come down for a missionary farewell, I don't know whose, and we took her back. I remember singing while we traveled. We went to Snowflake for the Flake reunion a couple of times.
Mom went to England with the Singing Mothers and that was a highlight in her life. Mom and Dad went to Italy to pick up Ivan from his mission and toured parts of Europe on the way home. Mom and Dad went to Israel with LeAnne and Carl and then on to Germany for the Passion Play in Oberamergow. They had a great time doing that. One Christmas Mom and Dad went to Hawaii and went to the Rose Bowl Parade on the way home. They went on a trip back to New England to see the fall leaves and thought that was cool. I cant tell you any specifics about their trips other than they went. Some of the trips that they went on were chartered trips.
Mom and Dad didn't learn a language. They didn't have a need to learn one."

Preferences Week #3
1. Do you know of any favorite poems they had?
2. What was their favorite food and how did they prepare it? Or what was your favorite food that they made?
3. What kind of games did they enjoy playing?
4. Did they have a favorite painting or artist?
5. What was their favorite dessert?
"1. I don't remember poems, but they sure loved lyrics to Church hymns.
2. Sweet corn and tomatoes from their garden. Yum! Favorite summer memories!
3. Rook, Skip-Bo, and any other card games.
4. Don't recall, but they really like Church artwork. Grandma enjoyed quilt art.
5. I don't remember any desert in particular, but Grandma did a good job on all of them. They liked their homemade things, as did everyone else!!!!!
They had a gift for making it fun for everyone, even if they didn't have two nickels to rub together. They were such a good example to me, and I learned so much from the both of them about marriage, raising children, living a good, honorable life, and having fun. I really miss them."

"I am fairly certain that way the rice pudding worked was if you had the WHOLE almond instead of a sliver or piece of an almond that you won grandpa and grandma taking you out to dinner. That was a yummy dessert with the strawberry Danish Dessert on top."

"The only question I can answer is the question about games.
They enjoyed playing card games. They liked to play Rook a lot. They played Rook with Harold and Margaret Robins regularly. It was probably at least once a month maybe oftener. When they were on their mission they played Skip-Bo with Mark and Renee Houser.
When we would play games as a family we would play Mormon Bridge or Hearts (Dirty Dora). If there were only a few of us we would also play Rook.
Mom and Dad liked to play games. I also remember playing games like Black Magic and Going to Heaven on a Broom ( I think that is what it was called), Do You Like Your Neighbor, Fruit Basket, The Animal Game just to name a few."

1. Where was their favorite place to shop?
2. What was their favorite time of day?
3. Were they “night owls” or “early birds”? Describe some of these habits and routines.
4. Do you recall a favorite pair of shoes they owned? Describe them.
5. Did they have a favorite author? Who? Why? Tell about favorite books. What did books mean to them?
"1. It seems to me that the only stores I remember grandma loving to shop at were any fabric store and storehouse market on 400 S and just East of State Street in Orem. I remember we went there too and there was a really cold room where they kept the produce I believe.
2. I don’t recall what their favorite time of day was but it seemed that in the afternoons you could always find them sitting in their recliners reading books together in the front room. What a great example they set for me.
3. In my mind they were early birds because grandpa was a farmer and had to be when he was young, but I remember family parties lasting until later than normal for my bedtime so they could have been either. One favorite memory was the grown-ups playing cards while the kids played our own games like murder in the dark, truth or dare (most always happened) or ghost in the graveyard or whatever.
4. I don’t recall a favorite pair of shoes for either of them, but I do recall that as a little girl it looked like they had a whole lot of them in their very nice walk-in closet.
5. I can’t say that I know about favorite books, but it seems that most often they would be reading books written by the apostles. They were always seeking to know more about the gospel."

"The shoe game went were gona pass this shoe from me to you to you were gona pass this shoe now do just as I do!Hey I also wanted to add remember Christmas parties how fun they were! How we watched each child from the young to old open a gift! Gosh looking back lots of gifts they bought!I always like to go to grandmas sewing room! I'm sure she loved me in there! She was always making some beautiful things! Wedding dresses quilts outfits! I also remember going on a field trip with my school and guess who was driving yep grandpa. I was so proud of him I had to show him off and I felt so special I got to sit in the front! That was a proud moment!Do you all remember gathering in the living room singing songs and listening to all the singers in the family who got the voice of grandma! To bad it skiped me! But the song I will always remember is the swallow song! Don't know the name but I could sing it for you but I won't do that to you!I always tell my husband he would have loved meeting my grandma. Her personality was so much fun! Water fights and games it was so much fun at her house. She even would hide prizes in food! Does anyone remember the food games. Like she had a pudding that had walnuts in it and who ever had the whole walnut got a prize!"

I also remember going with her to either the dry cleaners or a florist once and she talked and talked to the storekeeper there as though they had been friends forever! (They probably had!!!)

"1. I remember many shopping excursions to the fabric stores. We would grab JoEllen and Yvonne and had such a good time. Got great deals, too. Grandma had an eye for a good deal. Who could forget Storehouse Market? They also had a traveling salesman that would stop by the house, and they would buy things from him.
2. Don't recall their favorite time of day, but I am sure it was when they were with their family.
3.Grandpa was a farmer, so he was used to getting up early. They could stay up and party with the family, though. Grandpa would get his cat naps in during the day.
4. I remember Grandpa's workboots. They were well worn and attested to the strong work ethic that he possessed.
5. They should have owned stock in Deseret Book. They were always reading books by our Church leaders and sharing what they learned with the rest of us.Miscellaneous Stuff: Remember how much Grandpa hated Morning Glories? Whenever I see them growing wild, I think about that and laugh. I think we gave him a packet of seeds as a joke one year. Grandma's cooking was the best, bar none! Her rolls were heavenly, and she could make a breakfast that would be the envy of most restaurants."

"I remember Mom liked to go shopping at fabric stores. She could look at a pattern book and then find a piece of fabric and know that they would look great together. When Mom would go shopping for the men in our family she liked to shop at Levens in Provo. I felt like they knew my parents and that was neat.
For Daddy I don't know if his favorite time of day was morning but he had no choice being a dairy farmer. When he retired he still was up fairly early. I know that Daddy liked to watch the news that came on at 10:00. He also would stay up and watch the BYU vs. Hawaii games if they were televised and they were late.
I think Mom liked to get up and get going. When we would do our canning she was already started by the time I would get there with my family.
I don't know that either Mom or Daddy had a favorite author. But I do know that they enjoyed reading, especially after their family were raised. I remember working in Daddy's journal and he would mention a particular book that he was reading. I would go down and visit them and they would both be reading. "

Their Preferences #1
1. Which sports did grandma and/or grandpa enjoy as a spectator? Which sports did they participate in? Tell of a memory you have with them and sports.
2. What kind of things do you remember them collecting?
3. What kind of music did they like? Share a memory of them with music.
4. What things did they enjoy doing? What did you enjoy doing with them?
5. What was their favorite restaurant? Why did they like to go there?
"1. Grandpa loved sports period. I remember him sitting in his chair with his knees crossed and his chin propped on his hand watching basketball or tennis or golf. Of course I was bored to tears. Upon reading this question I did have a memory from a long time ago come to mind of attending the BYU basketball game with him. He seems to be the only person I can recall being there. I think I was very young
2. Seems like grandma collected sayings. I smile when I recall all the little plaques on her wall with so many clever sayings. While I don’t know that she collected them I do recall she had so many vases in her cold storage. Of course she seemed to collect anything relating to sewing. That was one of her greatest passions and she was so good at it. I am thankful that she passed that knowledge on to me.
3. They loved music in general. It was music that brought them together in the first place. They were both blessed with beautiful voices and grandma had many other musical talents of writing music and playing piano. It seems like I recall that she played the cello as well. I’m not sure about that one though.
4. The both loved fishing and I have never been able to enjoy fishing as much without them."

3. Mormon Tab and Barbershop. They liked songs they could sing together.
4. Fishing! (What did you enjoy doing with them?) I got to go on a fishing trip with them! Gramma was hip! She liked getting tan.
5. I don't remember them liking restaurants - they liked to have home grown cantalope, tomatoes and corn for dinner. That was it! Nothing more..."

"I remember Grandma's beautiful voice. I miss her singing and getting everyone to sing when we got together for christmas. She would always gather us all around in their living room and we would carol to each other. I was a little boy then, but I've always remembered that, and the beautiful spirit that was felt as we all sang together. They always just enjoyed getting everyone together and being with the family."

" 1. I remember playing "Steal the Flag." I believe that Grandma and Grandpa just watched but that was a great memory. I also remember a water balloon fight. I believe Grandma was behind that one.
2. Material for her Quilts! She had a whole bunch at least started and she finished a ton.
3. ALL Church Music. I loved listening to Grandma sing. "Love at Home" was a huge memory with me! I believe we sang that often.
4. I loved making and of course EATING Grandmas cookies. I only liked Grandma's Raisen cookies, I tried other people's but Grandma's takes 1st place with me. Speaking of food, I MISS HER HOMEMADE ROLLS. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. Does anyone have her recipe? I also LOVED playing all kinds of CARDS with Grandma and Grandpa. I think that is why I love playing games so much today, because they instilled that in me.
5. I'm not sure of a favorite resteraunt, but I do know that I loved having family dinners. I always looked forward to them and everytime we had great food and we always had some sort of mixed fruit/vegetable drink. I don't think we ever had the same thing twice."

"I remember going on Easter egg hunts and trying to find all the fun eggs with money in them!I also remember when we went to the cabin and ate chilly playing pass this shoe and the animal game! Then that night when most were relaxed and asleep it was funny for us kids to hear musical farts by all the old farts in the dark cabin. We all laughed all night! I don't know if you call that laughing gas or what!I also remember grandmas tubby! The cool tub with the jets! It was fun to take a tubby in grandmas tub. Grandpa always wanted to get you to laugh he would poke you and tickle you! He was determand to get a smile!Ill never forget grandmas cookies in her green cookie jar! I never liked raisens in my cookies but for some reason I loved grandmas!Can you all remember the bug zapper? When ever I see a bug zapper It takes me back to playing outside on the playground with eveyone hanging outside talking and playing not to mention the sniper hunts! I always wanted to go on!"

"1. As everybody knows there most favorite sport was fishing and camping. I remember as a child getting up early in the morning so we could go fishing with grandpa and great grandpa so we could be at strawberry res with our lines in the water when the sun came up. Then being so tried at the end of the day that we fall asleep in the back of greatgrandpas old nash rambler with the fishing poles sticking out the side rear window. Going fishing when i was older with mom and dad and the horners. catching so many fish that we had to take fish down to the horners house in heber so we could fish longer.
2.Grandpa and grandma really didn't collect much of anything,except good memories and good friends, if you count that as collecting. I guess grandma's fabric collection which i don't think she started out as collecting. But she did have a sweat shirt that said 'the one with the most fabrics when she dies wins", if that was the case she won, in more ways then one.
3. They loved all good wholesome music. From church music to classical to barbershop music.I remember the good times they had when they were involved in Sweetadaliens and spebsqsa. I remember as a child listening to classical music on Saturday morning while we worked.Grandma had one of the most beautiful voices you could ever hear and I enjoyed listening and singing with her, especially at Christmas time and going caroling to people in the ward who needed some comfort at Christmas time.
4.I think that was answered in the first one.
5.I don,t think they really had a favorite restaurant unless it was grandmas kitchen, she could make the most remarkable meal out almost nothing. I do remember going up to the Homestead in Midway and eating a couple of times and thinking, My good gosh how much it must of cost. I do remember going to Las Vegas to visit LeAnn and family [i don't remember for sure what for] and they took us out to eat at some restaurant and Carl and grandpa arguing about who was going to pay the check { it was a nice argument} anyway grandpa won out. When we got home we called to let them know we had made it home safe. Carl asked if we had found the present he had left for us in the sack with the donuts they gave us for the ride home {it was 100 dollars as I remember} but we hadn't eaten all the donuts and had put in the garbage on the way home so we all had a good laugh over that. I guess they both paid for supper."

"I remember going over to grandma and grandpa's house and always relaxing. A couple of my favorite memories from there are, playing hide and go seek in the basement and hiding all over the place (under the stairs, in the pantry, in the rooms, and behind the bar, ect.) I also remember that grandma and grandpa had what seemed like a million-in-a-half board games that were in a closet off the hall. The pool table is a huge memory also. I remember wanting to be big and grabbing the cue stick and grandpa telling me that I wasn't big enough yet to use that. There are a lot of memories I have at grandma and grandpa's house but because I was really young when we left and when grandma passed away I can't answer any ot the questions. Although my most favorite memory was we were together as a family and everyone was playing and having fun. Then grandma was gone. Then the next thing we know there is grandma in her bathing suit on the balcony throwing water balloons down on to everyone not caring if we wanted to gee wet or not. It was a blast."

"1. I think that Grandpa talked about playing basketball when he was younger. He loved watching football and basketball. I don't remember Grandma being all that much into it, other than watching the game with them. I know that it is not a sport, but they really liked playing Rook.
2. Grandma collected sayings, music, friends, and fabric! I think that Grandpa just collected funny stories and grandchildren. LOL!
3. Grandpa sang barbershop quartet,and Grandma sang with a mother's group that I think went to Washington, DC to perform. I remember them singing "Master the Tempest Is Raging" together. I always think about them when I hear that hymn. Another musical memory comes from their missionary homecoming when all the grandkids sang "Pioneer Children." They were very proud of their pioneer heritage. Grandma would hear a new hymn and tell Grandpa, "Ross, I want that played at my funeral." The list of hymns got so long that we all laughed.
4. They loved to fish, play cards, and hang with the family. Who doesn't remember their "cavemen" meals. No one was allowed to eat with utensils. They were so creative and fun to be around. Mark and I used to double-date with them before we got married. Our dates would comprise playing "Skip-Bo." Always a good time. Of course, we always accused Grandpa of cheating. It was our standing joke.
5. As for restaurants, occasionally they would go to a buffet style place. However, the cooking and food was much better at home, which is where they preferred to stay."

"1. I remember going to BYU basketball games in the old Smith Fieldhouse. I don't know if we had season tickets or not. I do remember that we had tickets to a game and we went to that game and then we left to go down to Las Vegas for the blessing of Paul. We drove all night and got there early in the morning. Went to the blessing, had dinner and then drove home. It was a long day.
I guess that is one of the reasons that I have tried to make it to the blessings and baptisms even though we have had to drive is because of the example that my parents set for me.
Daddy loved to go to the basketball games in the Marriot Center as well. He would take his radio with him so that he could watch the play but also listen to it. Mom would get a program and keep track of the score. Keeping track like they do at the scorers table. Trying to give the basket to the player that made the basket, keeping track of the fouls. She said that it helped her focus on the game and not get distracted by the things going on around her.
They seemed to like BYU sports. Daddy would go to the football games if the weather was nice but he didn't like to sit in the cold. (I guess that is where I get that)
2. The thing that Mom probably collected more than anything was fabric. We would go to a fabric store and if Mom saw a fabric that she liked she would buy it. She didn't know what she was going to make with it, but that didn't matter.
The only thing that Daddy possibly collected was fishing equipment. But I didn't ever feel like it was something that he was obsessive about. He did like fishing.
3 Music Mom loved the Tabernacle Choir. We would listen to the choir almost every morning. I remember getting up some mornings and mom would still be in bed, so I would go lay in bed with her and listen to the choir and sometimes fall back asleep. Mom used to say to me while we were laying there hold still. I thought I was being still but realized later as my kids did the same thing that what I thought was still wasn't.
Mom sang in the Singing Mothers with Sis Florence Jepperson Madsen. She had the opportunity to sing at General Conference in October. It was fun to watch and see if she would be shown on the screen. She also had the opportunity to go to England for the dedication of the Hyde Park Chapel because of singing with the Singing Mothers. They went over on a ship and practiced then when they got there they joined with theSinging Mothers from England. That was one of the highlights in her life, I think.
Mom and Dad sang with the Barbershop Chorus. They loved doing this. After they both stopped they went to the Barbershop Concert.
From my perspective they LOVED music of all kinds and loved to sing all kinds of music. Music was part of their lives and very important to them.
4. I remember one summer helping dad milk the cows, it was the summer between my Junior and Senior high school year. Marvin was having a hard time getting up in the morning. Daddy would come in and had done the milking by himself. I told him after a few days of this that I would get up and help him. He didn't let me do any of the heavy lifting, which was good. I would let the cows in and out and grain them. I got to feed the calves after they had learned to drink. Daddy would teach them how then after I would feed them. That was a great experience for me as I learned to appreciate my dad more and felt closer to him because of that experience.
Mom and I did lots of things together. I learned to make bread from my mother, learned to sew, and learned to cook and preserve the fruits and vegetables that we grew. I remember even after getting married the canning sessions that we would have. We worked together to get both of our canning done.
5. I don't know if they had a favorite restaurant. I know they ate at Bill and Iva's Cafe in Orem several times. They also ate at the Coachman in Provo. I think that they would eat at a place for a while and then someone would introduce them to a new place and that would become their favorite for a while. They enjoyed eating out, but I can't say that they did it often. I don't remember them going out often when I was growing up."

2. Seems like grandma collected sayings. I smile when I recall all the little plaques on her wall with so many clever sayings. While I don’t know that she collected them I do recall she had so many vases in her cold storage. Of course she seemed to collect anything relating to sewing. That was one of her greatest passions and she was so good at it. I am thankful that she passed that knowledge on to me.

"I remember Grandma's beautiful voice. I miss her singing and getting everyone to sing when we got together for christmas. She would always gather us all around in their living room and we would carol to each other. I was a little boy then, but I've always remembered that, and the beautiful spirit that was felt as we all sang together. " 1. I remember playing "Steal the Flag." I believe that Grandma and Grandpa just watched but that was a great memory. I also remember a water balloon fight. I believe Grandma was behind that one.
2. Material for her Quilts! She had a whole bunch at least started and she finished a ton.
3. ALL Church Music. I loved listening to Grandma sing. "Love at Home" was a huge memory with me! I believe we sang that often.
4. I loved making and of course EATING Grandmas cookies. I only liked Grandma's Raisen cookies, I tried other people's but Grandma's takes 1st place with me. Speaking of food, I MISS HER HOMEMADE ROLLS. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. Does anyone have her recipe? I also LOVED playing all kinds of CARDS with Grandma and Grandpa. I think that is why I love playing games so much today, because they instilled that in me.
5. I'm not sure of a favorite resteraunt, but I do know that I loved having family dinners. I always looked forward to them and everytime we had great food and we always had some sort of mixed fruit/vegetable drink. I don't think we ever had the same thing twice."

"I remember going on Easter egg hunts and trying to find all the fun eggs with money in them!I also remember when we went to the cabin and ate chilly playing pass this shoe and the animal game! Then that night when most were relaxed and asleep it was funny for us kids to hear musical farts by all the old farts in the dark cabin. We all laughed all night! I don't know if you call that laughing gas or what!I also remember grandmas tubby! The cool tub with the jets! It was fun to take a tubby in grandmas tub. Grandpa always wanted to get you to laugh he would poke you and tickle you! He was determand to get a smile!Ill never forget grandmas cookies in her green cookie jar! I never liked raisens in my cookies but for some reason I loved grandmas!Can you all remember the bug zapper? When ever I see a bug zapper It takes me back to playing outside on the playground with eveyone hanging outside talking and playing not to mention the sniper hunts! I always wanted to go on!"

"1. As everybody knows there most favorite sport was fishing and camping. I remember as a child getting up early in the morning so we could go fishing with grandpa and great grandpa so we could be at strawberry res with our lines in the water when the sun came up. Then being so tried at the end of the day that we fall asleep in the back of greatgrandpas old nash rambler with the fishing poles sticking out the side rear window. Going fishing when i was older with mom and dad and the horners. catching so many fish that we had to take fish down to the horners house in heber so we could fish longer.
2.Grandpa and grandma really didn't collect much of anything,except good memories and good friends, if you count that as collecting. I guess grandma's fabric collection which i don't think she started out as collecting. But she did have a sweat shirt that said 'the one with the most fabrics when she dies wins", if that was the case she won, in more ways then one.
3. They loved all good wholesome music. From church music to classical to barbershop music.I remember the good times they had when they were involved in Sweetadaliens and spebsqsa. I remember as a child listening to classical music on Saturday morning while we worked.Grandma had one of the most beautiful voices you could ever hear and I enjoyed listening and singing with her, especially at Christmas time and going caroling to people in the ward who needed some comfort at Christmas time.

5.I don,t think they really had a favorite restaurant unless it was grandmas kitchen, she could make the most remarkable meal out almost nothing. I do remember going up to the Homestead in Midway and eating a couple of times and thinking, My good gosh how much it must of cost. I do remember going to Las Vegas to visit LeAnn and family [i don't remember for sure what for] and they took us out to eat at some restaurant and Carl and grandpa arguing about who was going to pay the check { it was a nice argument} anyway grandpa won out. When we got home we called to let them know we had made it home safe. Carl asked if we had found the present he had left for us in the sack with the donuts they gave us for the ride home {it was 100 dollars as I remember} but we hadn't eaten all the donuts and had put in the garbage on the way home so we all had a good laugh over that. I guess they both paid for supper."

"I remember going over to grandma and grandpa's house and always relaxing. A couple of my favorite memories from there are, playing hide and go seek in the basement and hiding all over the place (under the stairs, in the pantry, in the rooms, and behind the bar, ect.) I also remember that grandma and grandpa had what seemed like a million-in-a-half board games that were in a closet off the hall. The pool table is a huge memory also. I remember wanting to be big and grabbing the cue stick and grandpa telling me that I wasn't big enough yet to use that. There are a lot of memories I have at grandma and grandpa's house but because I was really young when we left and when grandma passed away I can't answer any ot the questions. Although my most favorite memory was we were together as a family and everyone was playing and having fun. Then grandma was gone. Then the next thing we know there is grandma in her bathing suit on the balcony throwing water balloons down on to everyone not caring if we wanted to gee wet or not. It was a blast."

"1. I think that Grandpa talked about playing basketball when he was younger. He loved watching football and basketball. I don't remember Grandma being all that much into it, other than watching the game with them. I know that it is not a sport, but they really liked playing Rook.
